A click often indicates a voltage drop under load (weak battery or bad connections). Systematic testing: battery, charger and consumption measurement
Once the everyday car electrical faults start, the most sensible sequence of events is almost always the same: 1) basic battery condition and voltage, 2) load and voltage drops at start-up, 3) charging voltage and charging behaviour, 4) sleep mode consumption. This sequence saves time, because each step gives an indication of the next: a weak battery can cause “false diagnoses” for other components, and a faulty charger can quickly ruin even a new battery.
For a battery, the resting voltage alone is not always enough, although it is a good starting point. A full battery is typically around 12.6-12.8 V (temperature and battery type will affect this), but more important is how the voltage behaves at start-up and under load. If the voltage drops significantly during start-up, the battery may be weak or there may be high resistance in the connections. At the same time, it is worth checking whether the car has an AGM or EFB battery (start-stop systems) and whether the battery should be registered/adapted to the car: the wrong battery type or inadequate adaptation can impair charging in the long term.

The consumption measurement is only taken correctly when the car has actually entered sleep mode: doors closed, locks on, interior lights off, and, depending on the car model, waiting long enough for the controls to fall asleep.
In practice, the most systematic way to limit consumption is to measure the current and remove the fuses one by one to see when consumption drops. In this way, a circuit (e.g. entertainment system, central locking, car boot light, accessory) can be found through which the current is escaping. An experienced repairer will also often use a resin ammeter and manufacturer-specific test methods to ensure that the measurement is safe and repeatable, and does not generate new fault codes or accidentally wake up the control devices.
