When the clutch engages from the top, the engagement point is exceptionally close to the pedal’s top position. This does not always indicate an immediate fault, but when combined with other signs, it may point to wear on the clutch plate, a loss of adjustment or a fault in the hydraulic system. In particular, if the feel of the pedal changes within a short period of time, it is worth investigating the cause promptly.
Typical signs to which you should respond These observations help to distinguish a clutch fault from the feel of the car whilst driving.
The laps “fly by” When accelerating, the revs rise significantly without a corresponding increase in speed.
The smell after unloading The smell of burnt rubber (particularly after a hill start or when creeping along) may indicate a slip.

Home tests: how can you tell whether the clutch is slipping or whether there’s a disengagement problem?
Many people want to carry out a few simple tests before booking an appointment. The point of these home tests is not to “prove” the fault with 100 per cent certainty, but to gather useful observations: when the symptom occurs, whether it is reproducible, and whether it is linked to load, temperature or a particular gear. The more detailed the observations, the quicker the garage can pinpoint the root cause.
One of the safest ways to assess wheel slip is to accelerate gently in a high gear. Drive on a flat road at, for example, 60–80 km/h and press the accelerator firmly (but not dangerously). If the revs rise noticeably but the power doesn’t follow, the engine may be slipping. Similarly, a problem with the clutch disengagement is often indicated by the gears feeling stiff when stationary or the vehicle creeping forward, even when the clutch pedal is fully depressed.

Avoid tests in which the clutch is deliberately “burned in” (e.g. prolonged idling with the handbrake applied). These can make the situation worse and cause both the clutch assembly and the flywheel to overheat. Why is the clutch slipping? The clutch assembly, flywheel and hydraulics explained in simple terms
There may be several components underlying a clutch problem, and therefore simply saying “the clutch is slipping” does not in itself indicate which part needs replacing. A clutch assembly typically comprises the clutch disc, pressure plate and thrust bearing. Slippage is often caused by wear on the friction surface of the clutch disc or a reduction in the clamping force of the pressure plate. Oil or grease contamination (e.g. a leak from the crankshaft rear seal or the gearbox seal) can also damage the friction surface and cause slipping surprisingly quickly.
Many newer cars are fitted with a dual-mass flywheel (DMF), which is designed to dampen engine vibrations. When the DMF wears out, it can cause rattling, vibration, jerking when pulling away and a vague “springy” feel. Not everyone notices the symptoms of a worn DMF straight away, as the car may still run – but when the clutch is being replaced, the condition of the DMF must be thoroughly assessed to ensure the same work does not need to be repeated soon.
The hydraulic clutch system (master cylinder, slave cylinder, hoses, fluid) affects whether the clutch disengages properly and how the pedal feels. If there is a leak, air in the system or internal leakage, the clutch may remain “half-engaged” or “half-disengaged”. In such cases, the symptoms may resemble both slipping and a disengagement problem, and the gears may not engage properly, particularly when the engine is hot.

How does a garage diagnose a problem when the clutch is slipping or not engaging properly?
When you bring your car in for a check-up, the garage will start by asking you some questions and taking it for a test drive: when does the clutch slip or grab, does the problem occur when the engine is cold or warm, in a specific gear or in all gears, and are there any noises or vibrations? During the test drive, the relationship between revs and speed is compared, the car’s behaviour when pulling away is assessed, and gear engagement is tested under different loads.
Next, check the basics: the level and condition of the clutch fluid (if hydraulic), any leaks, the pedal travel and any irregularities. If necessary, bleed the system and check that the pressure remains normal. In some cars, the working cylinder is located inside the gearbox (known as a centre-shaft clutch or CSC), in which case a small leak may go unnoticed for a long time before it becomes apparent – but it can still ruin the clutch plate.
If the symptoms suggest mechanical wear, the actual condition of the clutch assembly and flywheel can often only be confirmed once the unit has been dismantled. At this stage, the thickness of the friction surface, any signs of burning, the evenness of the assembly, the condition of the thrust bearing, and the flywheel’s play and damping are assessed. Repair options and a sensible way forward in the Siuntio–Kirkkonummi area
